Bengaluru: Soon after the reports of the death of former Indian and Karnataka Ranji cricketer David Johnson surfaced, former India head coach Anil Kumble offered his condolences.
Taking to X, Kumble wrote, “Saddened to hear the passing of my cricketing colleague David Johnson. Heartfelt condolences to his family. Gone too soon “ Benny”!”
Johnson reportedly committed suicide by jumping from the 4th floor of a private apartment on Thursday. Sources told Republic World that Johnson took the extreme step due to depression. People close to the retired cricketer said that Johnson faced financial instability for some time, leading his family to seek assistance from friends.
Upon receiving the information of his demise, Kothanur police visited the spot. His body is being taken to Crescent Hospital.
"It is believed that 52-year-old David Jude Johnson fell from his Apartment in Kanaka Sri Layout in Kothanur giving rise to the suspicion of suicide," a police official said, adding, further investigations are on.
David Johnson, born on October 16, 1971, was a former Indian cricketer known for his brief international career as a fast bowler. He played in two Test matches for India in 1996, making his debut against Australia. With Javagal Srinath injured, Johnson bowled alongside his Karnataka teammate Venkatesh Prasad. He then toured South Africa and played in the first Test. However, due to a lack of control, his Test career was limited to just two matches, where he took three wickets. Despite his promising start and notable pace, he struggled with consistency and fitness, which limited his opportunities at the international level.
Johnson, a former fast bowler, is survived by wife, a son and a daughter, they said.
