There is no denying the fact that Formula 1 drivers earn a staggering amount of money of which the details are kept under wraps. The former Mercedes driver and 2009 F1 world champion Jenson Button have spilt beans on the rewards that the drivers earn in the motorsport.
Button, in his new book ‘How to be an F1 driver’, has explained how drivers’ salaries work. He has mentioned that some drivers will earn a $1million (£773,000) bonus if they win a race. Just one race.
He also has said that there is no bonus for winning a Drivers’ Championship and It’s the Constructors’ Championship that’s worth the big bucks.
Lewis Hamilton's salary at Mercedes
The Mercedes star has played a crucial role in his team winning the Constructors’ Championship for a sixth straight year's. It is widely reported Hamilton also pockets an enormous £40million base salary.
According to Button, someone like Hamilton is not only the highest-paid person in the team but also probably the highest-paid person in the whole of Daimler AG, Mercedes’ parent company.
Hamilton, a former teammate of Button, is on course to win his sixth Drivers’ Championship at the United States Grand Prix this weekend.
Lewis Hamilton waits for sixth F1 world title after win at Mexico
Lewis Hamilton drove to a near-flawless victory, but not yet a sixth drivers' world championship on Sunday when he claimed his 10th win of the season for Mercedes at the Mexican Grand Prix. The defending five-time title-winner produced the measured drive of a champion-elect to claim a well-judged triumph ahead of Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas. Hamilton is now just four points away from winning his sixth world championship.
The British driver only needs to finish eighth at next week's US GP to move one behind Michael Schumacher's record haul of seven championships, while he is also guaranteed the title if Bottas fails to win in Austin.
