On this day back in 2008, Usain Bolt broke his first 100 metres world record with a time of 9.72 seconds at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York.
Bolt, by then a 21-years-old sprinter, lowered the previous best held by compatriot Asafa Powel who ran 9.74 seconds.
The Jamaican legend, who was competing just on his fifth 100 metres race, beat world champion Tyson Gay and Darvis 'Doc' Patton, second and third.
The eight-times Olympic gold medallist retired from athletics after the 2017 World Championships.
