In a surprising twist at the Paris Olympics, Algeria's Imane Khelif emerged as an unlikely hero for Team USA in their fierce medal tally battle against China. Competing in the 66-kg class in women’s Olympic boxing, Khelif secured a gold medal by defeating China’s Yang Liu in the final, a victory that played a crucial role in determining the ultimate winner of the Olympic medal count.
How Imane Khelif helped the USA beat China on Paris Olympics medal tally
Imane Khelif's triumph not only earned her personal glory but also had significant implications for the overall medal standings. Her victory prevented China from breaking the gold-medal tie with the United States, leaving both countries locked at 40 gold medals each. In Olympic tradition, the country with the most gold medals tops the medal table.
However, when the count is tied, the total number of medals becomes the decisive factor. The United States edged out China in the overall tally, amassing 126 medals compared to China’s 91. This ensured that Team USA would finish atop the medal standings, securing their position as the No. 1 nation at the Paris Olympics.
The irony of Imane Khelif’s contribution to the United States’ Olympic success lies in the fact that she was previously the target of a smear campaign on social media, primarily driven by right-wing trolls from the USA. These detractors spread false and damaging rumors about Khelif’s gender, attempting to discredit her achievements. Despite the hateful rhetoric, Khelif’s performance in the ring silenced her critics and ultimately played a pivotal role in helping the USA secure the top spot.
