How much real gold does the Paris Olympics medal have?
Despite their golden appearance, each gold medal contains only six grams of real gold. The remainder of the gold medal, weighing 529 grams, is composed primarily of silver. The silver medals weigh 525 grams and are made entirely of solid silver. Bronze medals, weighing 455 grams, are made from a solid bronze alloy. All medals have a fixed diameter of 85mm and a thickness of 9.2mm.
The use of solid metals for silver and bronze medals is a cost-effective measure, while the gold medals' limited gold content maintains a balance between tradition and practicality. The medals for the Paris 2024 Olympics are crafted by LVMH jeweller Chaumet.
