A debatable red card to one of the premier defenders of the team and being momentarily reduced to 9-men in a do-or-die game in the Paris Olympics, could not dampen the spirits of the Men's Hockey Team of India as the unit fought hard, and against all the odds scripted a famous win against Great Britain in the quarterfinal of the competition. The win took India to the semi-final, and eventually, the team finished on the podium, bringing back a Bronze medal. The victory over GB will go down as an integral part of India's successful run in Paris, which even delighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Upon the team's home arrival, PM Modi hosted the Hockey team along with other Olympics at his home. Listening to "sarpanch saab's" tale about the victory against Great Britain, PM Modi could not refrain from taking a gentle swipe at Great Britain, highlighting India's longstanding history with Britain.
