Vinesh Phogat CAS Verdict Highlights: Verdict To Come On August 16

The CAS ad hoc division president has allowed Dr Annabelle Bennett, Sole Arbitrator in the Vinesh Phogat vs. United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) matter, an extension until 6-00 pm (Paris time) on Friday, August 16, 2024

The CAS will pronounce its much-awaited verdict on Vinesh Phogat's disqualification case soon.

On Sports Court CAS's hearing of Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, Olympic Silver medallist, Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra says "All of us know that if she gets the medal it will be really good. She would have got the medal if such a situation did not arise. If we don't get the medal, people remember us for some time and say we are their champions but if we don't get the medal they forget us as well...I just want to request people to not forget what Vinesh has done for the county..."

On the day of her 50kg Freestyle final, Vinesh Phogat was found 100gms overweight. Hence, she failed to meet the weight standard and consequently got disqualified.

The CAS verdict on Vinesh Phogat is expected to come around 9:30 PM IST.

India's Paris Olympics campaign ended with 6 medals. If CAS rules in favour of Vinesh Phogat, then she will have a silver medal to her name and India's tally will augment to 7.

There has been a widespread debate about Vinesh's silver medal dreams after the CAS asked Chiles to return her Olympic medal. The verdict of Phogat's plea will be out on August 13, 2024. Vinesh has appealed for a joint silver medal after she was disqualified from the finals of the 50Kg Women's Freestyle Wrestling. But there is a stark difference between Vinesh's and Chiles' case. Senior counsels Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania have been chosen to present Phogat's case.

"The responsibility of weight management of athletes in sport like wrestling, weightlifting, boxing and judo is that of each athlete and his or her coach and NOT that of the IOA-appointed Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala and his team... The hate directed at the IOA medical team, especially Dr. Pardiwala, is unacceptable and worthy of condemnation.

"Each Indian athlete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in such sport had his or her own support team. These support teams have been working with the athletes over so many years," PT Usha said in a statement.

Vinesh Phogat left the games village yesterday and according to sources she 

India Grappler Vinesh Phogat and her legal team may have taken advantage of a substantial loophole in the UWW rulebook during their case's hearing at the CAS.

Aug 6: Vinesh Phogat Reached The Final in 50kg Women's Freestyle wrestling; Assuring India at least a silver.

Aug 7: Vinesh Phogat was disqualified as she could not meet the required weight standard. She was assessed overweight by 100 odd grams.

Aug 7: Appealed to Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Aug 8: CAS accepted her appeal.

Aug 10: Final Verdict on the case was supposed to come about at 9:30 PM IST. However, a new notification was released of its deferment.

Aug 13: Final result will be released at 6 PM IST.
