After 15 years on the Formula 1 circuit, Scuderia Toro Rosso will now be called Scuderia Alpha Tauri. The F1 commission has approved their request for a name change. Toro Rosso has been on the racing grid since 2006 after Red Bull, the top energy drink brand acquired it in order to place some of its best junior racers. It was revealed last month that the brand was looking to rebrand its junior team.

E-vote saga
According to reports, the renaming of the team was approved via an e-vote that took place soon after the Russian Grand Prix. The team will be known as Alpha Tauri, after Red Bull's fashion brand and one of the stars in the Taurus constellation, from next season. Enthusiasts noticed that the renaming of teams without a change in ownership is very uncommon in the Formula One circuit.

While teams tweak their official names all the time to denote sponsors, very rarely do they change names completely without a change in ownership. In 2019, Swiss team Sauber took its title sponsorship to an unprecedented level by rebranding itself Alpha Romeo Racing as an ode to the Italian manufacturer. However, the operations behind the team continue to be entirely Swiss.
In 2018, Force India transformed to Racing Point after the team was put into administration during the Hungarian Grand Prix and was taken over by a consortium headed by Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll.
