Andy Murray's tennis career to face catastrophic consequences?

Andy Murray faces the prospect of cobalt poisoning in the blood if he continues playing tennis. This was said by Switzerland based Dr. Hannes Rudiger.

It has been quite an eventful week for World No 127 Andy Murray who captured his first ATP title in Antwerp after returning back following hip surgery. He also was included in the Great Britain team for the upcoming Davis Cup event. It looks like Murray's return to court comes at a cost as being explained by Switzerland based Dr Hannes Rudiger, who stated that Murray reportedly faces the prospect of cobalt poisoning in the blood if he continues playing tennis.

The specialist medical practitioner of the Zurich-based Schulthess Clinic has warned “catastrophic consequences” could await the Brit if continues to compete with a metallic hip.

Rudiger's take on Andy Murray hip surgery 

Murray had undergone hip resurfacing surgery earlier this year and claimed the European title last week without much trouble. However, Rudiger has seen first-hand negatives of such procedure and urged the three-time Grand Slam winner to execute extreme caution.

Speaking to a swiss media publication, Rudiger said that he would not have thought such a thing possible. According to him, it was a mission impossible to reach such a level with an artificial hip again. But Murray is also taking a high risk.

In this operation the implanted prosthesis, two metal surfaces rub against each other. The hips had to be replaced much faster than with conventional surgeries with such procedures damaging the body sustainably.

Effects of Birmingham Hip Resurfacing

Rudiger said that the consequences of playing sport with a metal hip are so severe he refuses to perform such surgery for any of his clients. He also said that the abrasion of the plates can lead to cobalt poisoning in the blood. The bones can be attacked, also nerve and visual damage are possible.
