ATP Finals: How the race to the final is shaping up
Alexander Zverev and Matteo Berrettini along with Roberto Bautista Agut, David Goffin are in contention for the remaining two spots. Despite losing the final in Shanghai, Zverev earned 600 points taking him into seventh place and leading eighth-placed Berrettini by 330 points, and ninth-placed Bautista Agut by 370 points. Berrettini, who reached his maiden Masters 1000 semi-final, lost to Zverev in semi-finals.
ATP Finals: David Goffin eyes jump in ranking
Goffin did not make move in the ranking after losing in the third round of the Shanghai Masters against Federer. But the Belgian, who was the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up, gets an opportunity this week to move into eighth place in the race.
Goffin is seeded second at the European Open in Antwerp and If he wins the title at home, he will earn 250 points helping him go past Berrettini. Eleventh-placed Fabio Fognini – who reached the quarter-finals in Shanghai – will also have an opportunity to bolster his London chance when he plays in the Stockholm Open.
ATP Finals: Rafael Nadal vs Djokovic battle for top spot
Current World No 1 Novak Djokovic had an opportunity to reduce the gap between him and Nadal in the race to the finals. A title win in Shanghai would have helped Djokovic move to within 460 points of Nadal, but his quarter-final loss to Tsitsipas only earned 180 of a possible 1,000 points. The Serbian will need to overcome a 1,280-point deficit in the Race with only Paris and the Nitto ATP Finals remaining on his tournament schedule.
