Karolina Pliskova emerged victorious against Petra Martic in the Zhengzhou Open final that finally came to an end on Sunday after the rain delays. Pliskova who made a rather slow start, soon recovered and went on to claim her fourth WTA Tour title of the season.

She had a slow start but soon picked up

The Czech player had not been able to get past the quarter-finals of any tournament since winning the Eastbourne International in June and also tasted defeat in the last 16 at both Wimbledon and the US Open. But she regained her form in China this week and gave the championship an unbeatable wrap without dropping a set. She defeated Martic by 6-3 6-2, despite initially struggling before the weather – a factor throughout the day – decisively intervened.

Pliskova benefitted from rains

Rain delayed the start and then disrupted play after just two games in which Pliskova was immediately broken and failed to come up with an instant response. According to Foxsports, she two appeared to benefit from the stoppage. That was evident as she won three consecutive games when play resumed, getting back on serve with a brilliant forehand winner down the line just minutes after saving a break point that would have had her 3-0 down.
