Roger Federer hints at retirement from tennis ahead of Novak Djokovic clash at ATP Finals?

When Roger Federer faces Novak Djokovic at London’s O2 Arena, in the virtual quarter-finals of the ATP Finals, he would be looking for some payback. Earlier this year, Djokovic has squashed the Swiss’ dream of winning a record ninth Wimbledon Championship. The maestro missed two match points on his own serve, and then Djokovic won the tiebreak to snatch his 5th Wimbledon victory. Now, the Tennis legend is looking to subdue the Serb to be able to win his sixth ATP finals.

However, the 20-time Grand Slam champion has hinted that he might bring down the curtains on his illustrious career soon. He said that a lot of his fans come out in large numbers, probably thinking it might be the last time they will see him on the court. Federer said that in the last few years, he has been overwhelmed by the tremendous support and love his fans have shown him, even as new tennis stars emerge. He said that it is their love that has kept him going on for so long.

At the ATP finals, Federer has not had smooth sailing. He lost his first match in the finals against Dominic Thiem in straight sets. But like a true champion, he rallied back into the game by defeating Matteo Berrettini, to keep his semi-final hopes alive. Now, he will take on Djokovic in their 49th match against each other to secure a spot in the semi-finals. Djokovic has the edge over Federer in the ATP — 26-22.

Wimbledon defeat

Federer also spoke about the scars from the Wimbledon defeat earlier this year. He said that he would not know how much that defeat has affected him till he faces Djokovic on Thursday, November 14. Federer said he wanted to believe that he has moved on from the Wimbledon defeat because he played his best on that day and had a great tournament. He said a lot of time has passed since then, and he has evolved as a player. The ATP Finals sees eight of the world’s top players compete for the end of the season prize. The players are split into two groups, and the best two from each qualify for semi-finals.
