Tokyo Olympic organizers say there have been early transport problems getting athletes to their venues on time.

Mark Adams, spokesman for the International Olympic Committee, acknowledged there had been "teething problems" but admitted this was a "very serious one".

There are about 11,000 athletes taking part in the Games and tens of thousands of media, broadcast and other professionals covering the event from all over the world.

All must abide to quarantine rules and can only move by Tokyo 2020 specially arranged transportation to shuttle between various venues or between their hotels and the main media center to avoid possible contagion and limit contact with local population.

A daunting logistic task for the games organizares and required them to rent thousands of coaches from private companies.

The media too have been affected by the transport issues.

"It's very complicated you know," said Ryu Voelkel, a freelance photographer from Germany.

"It doesn't really say where my hotel bus is going to go. Hopefully it will get better but this is the system."

Officials from the IOC and Tokyo’s local organizing committee were asked Sunday about athletes taking a taxi to their training site because of a late bus.

Tokyo spokesman Masa Takaya they are “aware that transport is experiencing some issues including delays” and that buses should always be on standby to meet demand.
