Ben Askren faced the second loss of his MMA career on Sunday against Demian Maia at UFC Fight Night 162 in Singapore. Demian Maia submitted Askren in the third round at 3:54 which raises a lot of questions in front of Ben Askren and UFC fans. After two back-to-back humiliating defeats, Askren is planning for his UFC retirement and has revealed that he never actually loved fighting, say media reports.
Is Ben Askren’s journey ending?
Ben Askren had a glorious start to the UFC, after being drafted from their rivals, the ONE Championship. He had a great run in the latter, making Askren emerge as one of the most feared grapplers of the game, before retiring in 2017. Askren then said that he has nothing else to prove and he just wanted to show that he is the best in the world. However, UFC President traded flyweight legend Demetrius Johnson to ONE Championship where DJ has already gained a title and in return signed in Ben ‘The Funky’ Askren. Ben managed a controversial win on his UFC debut against Robbie Lawler and then faced two humiliating losses on the trot in the UFC. Jorge Masvidal knocked out Askren clean in just five seconds and after Demian's victory over him, Ben Askren is considering retirement.
In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, Ben Askren said that he thinks that it is his time for cost-analysis. He needs to sit down with his family and think about his future. Ben Askren also mentioned that he never really loved fighting in the first place and he did it only to show the world that he can do it. Looks like the 1-2 run in his UFC career so far has shaken Ben Askren.
Dana White on Askren-DJ trade
Though Demetrius Johnson has already won a belt in the ONE Championship while Askren has lost ground in the UFC but President Dana White still believes that Askren was a good buy. Though MMA fans might think the opposite and have voiced their opinion on social media, Dana shut them down with a cheeky reply.
