Vinesh Phogat Disqualification Hearing In CAS: Govt Swings Into Action, Ropes In Harish Salve

The Court of Arbitration for Sports is hearing Vinesh Phogat's plea against her disqualification in the Paris Olympics 2024.

Vinesh Phogat's Disqualification: The Court of Arbitration for Sport, an international body, on Friday concluded the hearing on India's star wrestler Vinesh Phogat's plea against disqualification at the Paris Olympics. Phogat was disqualified before the final match for being overweight by 100 gms in 50 kg women free style wrestling. Phogat is being represented by renowned lawyer Harish Salve. The judgment of CAS is likely to be delivered before the conclusion of the Olympic games.

Harish Salve roped in by govt for Vinesh Phogat

Harish Salve, Senior Advocate Supreme Court, Former Solicitor General of India and King's Counsel will be representing the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for Vinesh Phogat at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

A day after the disqualification, Phogat had announced her retirement with a post that read, “Maa kushti (wrestling) won against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream and my courage have been broken. I don't have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all for forgiveness.”

According to reports, Harish Salve was roped in pro bono by the Centre for Vinesh Phogat after call from MHA and PMO.

Salve was not in picture till Thursday afternoon as he was supposed to travel. However, the ace lawyer cancelled his plans after he was asked by the government to appear pro bono for Indian Olympic association.
