Record title holder in WWE aiming for World Championship but not of Cody Rhodes'

Cody Rhodes is currently riding high as WWE's top champion. However, being a top champion does not always mean having a target on your back. While many ambitious talents in WWE are vying for a title shot at Rhodes’ WWE Undisputed Championship, one top star has stated he has no intention of pursuing the opportunity. That star is none other than "The Ring General," Gunther.

Gunther is in the reckoning for the World Championship

Having recently won the King of the Ring tournament, Gunther is now eligible to challenge the top champion of either Raw or SmackDown. However, Gunther does not appear interested in pursuing Cody Rhodes.

Cody Rhodes is well aware of Gunther's toughness and tenacity. The American Nightmare faced off against Gunther during the 2023 Royal Rumble match, where Gunther achieved a remarkable feat by lasting 71 minutes and 40 seconds as entrant number 1 before being eliminated by Rhodes. With this history, Gunther has a score to settle with Rhodes. However, for now, Gunther has other plans.

Gunther picks Damian Priest over Cody Rhodes

In an interview with Witty Whittier, the rising star was asked if he intends to exact revenge on Rhodes. The Ring General expressed his desire to pursue Damian Priest’s World Heavyweight Championship instead.

He said, “The future holds that I have a title match for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam [2024] and obviously, that's my goal. The World Heavyweight Championship is the top title on RAW, and that's the roster I got drafted to or stayed on after the last Draft. Obviously, that's my top priority, and the goal is going to be to do the same with the Intercontinental Championship, to win it, hold on to it as long as possible, and add as much prestige and glory to it as possible.”

Since Gunther and Cody Rhodes are on separate brands, the WWE Universe will have to wait to see them clash in a one-on-one match. Additionally, King Gunther is currently focused on the World Heavyweight Championship and aims to redeem his WrestleMania loss by recapturing the Intercontinental Championship from Sami Zayn. Meanwhile, Cody Rhodes is preparing for a high-stakes match against AJ Styles at WWE’s upcoming event, Clash at the Castle.
