"Starting today, you can use Instagram in dark mode on iOS 13 or Android 10. Turn dark mode on your phone to try it out," said Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram.
Dark modes have become popular in recent months. Recent iOS 13 and Android 10 updates enable native support for Dark themes across compatible apps. The purpose of Dark themes is to blacken app interfaces thereby reducing eye strain and at the same time, save your phone's battery life.
How to enable Dark mode
The latest Instagram update uses system-wide, native support for Dark themes. We show you how to enable Instagram's Dark theme in iOS 13. If you run the latest version of iOS or iPadOS, you need to turn Dark Mode on your device's settings. Once done, Instagram should auto-adjust to Dark Mode.
Step 1: Make sure you are running iOS 13 on your iPhone
Step 2: Open system settings on your iPhone
Step 3: Either install Instagram on your iPhone or simply update it to the latest version.
Step 4: Instagram on your phone should automatically switch to Dark mode
Similarly, you can enable Instagram Dark Mode on your Android device. But before you begin, make sure your phone is running on Android 10:
Step 1: Open Settings
Step 2: Navigate to Display > Dark theme
Step 3: Toggle the slider to enable/disable Dark theme
Step 4: Instagram on your Android should be able to auto-adjust to Dark mode.
Previously, XDA reported Instagram had rolled out an AMOLED dark theme on Android. Google has already added dark themes to most of its apps and over the last few weeks, we also have a sudden rise in terms of the number of third-party apps adopting dark modes. Instagram was previously testing the Dark theme in its Alpha builds.
Instagram Dark Mode can not be toggled on or off from within the app itself. Apparently, Instagram is still working on the feature. Previously, Alpha build screenshots revealed a nice combination of gray and black parts, making the content more comfortable to see.
