WhatsApp status mention: WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will enable users to mention group chats in their status updates. With this feature, users will no longer have to mention individuals in their status updates, adding a layer of convinience to the feature.

As of now, Meta-owned messaging app enables users to mention up to five individuals in their status updates. All the individuals mentioned in a status update are notified separately about the mention in the chat along with a link to the status. Now, WhatsApp is going a step ahead by working on a feature that will enable users to mention groups in their status updates.

WhatsApp: How will group mentions in status updates benefit users?

Essentially, this feature will let users mention more people in a status. It will also reduce the hassle of mentioning individuals separately. According to a report by WABetaInfo, all participants in the group that has been mentioned in a status update will automatically receive a notification about the status update, if the chat with the person who shared the status update has not been muted already.

The report also says that with the new group mention feature, users will no longer need to adjust their privacy settings to allow specific contacts to view the status update. "Instead, mentioning a group will automatically make the status update visible to all group members, regardless of the current privacy configurations," the report says.

In addition to this, the group mention feature will reduce the number of direct messages to users as the entire group will be notified through a single message in the group.

That said, at this moment it remains unclear if WhatsApp will put a cap on the number of groups that can be mentioned in a status update and the total number of members a group can have for this feature to work.
