Facebook is reportedly under scrutiny by the Federal Trade Commission, on concerns related to social media antitrust violations. The early-stage investigation is also apparently related to Facebook’s social networks.
As per a Bloomberg report, quoting unnamed sources, the FTC is currently making attempts to analyse competitive dynamics. Here, it is worth remembering that Facebook recently had to shell out $5 billion to the FTC concerning user privacy practices (Cambridge Analytica).
The unnamed source quoted Bloomberg also added that third-party agents were already contacted to aid in the FTC investigation into Facebook’s social networking. This probe is also said to have been acknowledged by Facebook on Wednesday.
To proceed with the probe, Facebook’s role in inflicting damages to competitors needs to be established by the FTC.
“Somebody has to have raised with them actual conduct that would fall within the realm of antitrust harm, which is limiting innovation, raising prices, or restricting output,” stated Barbara Sicalides – an antitrust advocate at Pepper Hamilton LLP, to Bloomberg.
As far as the Cambridge Analytica fine on Facebook is concerned, the FTC has also suggested the social media giant to introduce newer tools such that the authority monitors the newer privacy structure.
