JioPhone Prima 2 launched with KaiOS, Qualcomm chipset

Reliance Jio has launched the JioPhone Prima 2 feature phone that supports apps such as YouTube, Facebook, and Google Assistant to offer customers basic smartphone functionalities. Since the phone runs KaiOS, it supports video streaming, music streaming, and video calls. While the phone will also run WhatsApp initially, the Meta-owned chat app recently announced that it will stop offering services on KaiOS later this year or early 2025. JioPhone Prima 2 users can go for alternatives such as JioChat, which comes preinstalled. The phone also supports UPI-based online payments.

The JioPhone Prima 2 costs Rs 2,799 and will be available from Jio’s website, Amazon , and partner offline stores, such as Reliance Digital. It has a single Luxe Blue colour option.

The new feature phone from Reliance Jio has a 2.4-inch LCD, which does not support touchscreen functionality but has a T9 keyboard below it. It uses an unnamed Qualcomm processor, paired with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. Users can expand the storage using a microSD card of up to 128GB. The Prima 2 also supports 4G connectivity through a Jio SIM card.

With KaiOS 2.5.3, the feature phone can deliver a basic smartphone experience through Google’s suite of apps, Facebook, and Jio’s own apps for streaming and payments. The feature phone runs JioSaavn, JioTV, and JioCinema for music and video streaming, while JioChat will serve as an alternative to WhatsApp, allowing users to even make voice and video calls through the internet. Users can download more apps for different needs from the company’s JioStore, which also comes pre-installed on the phone.

UPI features are available through the JioPay UPI app, which comes pre-installed on the phone. The JioPhone Prima 2 has a 2,000mAh battery, a digital rear and selfie camera, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and Bluetooth 5.0. The feature phone supports English and Hindi, among 22 Indian languages.
