Microsoft’s next high-end Xbox gaming console is codenamed Project Scarlett and it will apparently be four times more powerful than the Xbox One X - which is currently the most powerful gaming console in the world. At its E3 2019 keynote event, Microsoft set the stage for its next-generation Xbox without showing any actual hardware per se. A similar strategy was adopted in the case of the Xbox One X as well, which was codenamed Project Scorpio – and with Sony dropping key specifics of the PS5 recently, it was only about time Microsoft also joined the party.
So, what are we looking at here? We’re looking at an Xbox console powered by a custom-built AMD Zen 2 processor and Radeon RDNA architecture paired with GDDR6 RAM and solid-state drive (SSD) storage – the combination will entail in a 40x performance boost in storage speed over existing consoles, according to Microsoft. “Thousands of games across four console generations will look and play best on Project Scarlett,” Microsoft says about Project Scarlett hinting that the console will theoretically be compatible with existing backward compatible Xbox and Xbox 360 games, and Xbox One titles, a strategy that the company has employed to open its past games for next-generation consoles to overcome the dearth of exclusive titles.
Project Scarlett will also support -
-8K gaming
-120fps gaming
-Ray-tracing
-Variable refresh rate support
Just to add to all the hype, Microsoft has also announced Halo Infinite – an Xbox-exclusive set to arrive alongside Project Scarlett in holiday 2020.
Microsoft will possibly have more to say about Project Scarlett at next year’s E3, including more launch titles (if any).
Microsoft was rumored to be working on two Xbox consoles under Project Scarlett – a high-end Xbox One X successor and an Xbox One S successor with hardware comparable or even slightly more powerful to the existing Xbox One X. Microsoft’s E3 reveal quashes rumors of a more affordable Xbox for the time being.
