According to a new patent application filed at the US Patent and Trademark Office, Samsung could start building 3D screens in the future that may allow users to connect their smartphones and tablets. While we can't say much about their form factors, Samsung could introduce these screens in the form of TVs or monitors. According to reports, these screens may be able to show content ranging from pictures and videos to 3D games.

As per the illustrations, Samsung may also users to cast the content from their smartphones to 3D screens. However, the output is expected to be totally different than that of normal TV screens and monitors. Reports suggest a few applications. For example, if users are speaking over a phone call, these screens may be able to show the person they are speaking to, in real time.

Patent reveals the screen uses a custom-made 3D user interface (UI) so that users can interact with the device either through touch or by stylus pens. Samsung's Galaxy Note and Tablet line-ups make use of Samsung's S-pen device. What's also being speculated is that these displays could feature sensors to detect how users interact with the content, courtesy of infrared radiation or ultrasound waves.

While we don't know for sure whether Samsung has plans to make this 3D display commercial available in the future, it may give Samsung a whole new direction as far as the future of 3D screens is concerned. Samsung is yet to comment on these reports.
