Guess who is trying to get the iPhone banned in this country?

Chip maker Qualcomm is seeking Chinese courts to impose a ban on the sale of select iPhone models within the country. The move comes right after Qualcomm won in court, leading to a preliminary ban on older Apple iPhone models within China. According to a new report, Qualcomm is trying to do the same thing to some of Apple’s latest models like the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR.

But why is Qualcomm trying to get the iPhone banned?

As for the main question, why is Qualcomm putting so much effort on getting the iPhone banned in China? First things first, this is not the first time Qualcomm has been trying to get iPhone banned. In fact, Qualcomm has been trying to block iPhone sales in China for over a year. It’s just that now Qualcomm has started to see some positive results.

All these bans happen to be only a part of years-long legal tension between Qualcomm and Apple. It all started with the iPhone maker accusing Qualcomm of overcharging for the use of basic patents and failing to pay $1 billion in rebates. Qualcomm, on the other hand, claimed that Apple stole Qualcomm’s intellectual property (source code) to share with Intel.

So what’s next?

Report has it citing court rulings that Apple is infringing Qualcomm’s software patents and given the fact that these patents in question are related to resizing pictures and managing applications, Apple is likely to find a way around the court order by simply updating its software.

Reuter report cited Apple as saying:

“Qualcomm’s effort to ban our products is another desperate move by a company whose illegal practices are under investigation by regulators around the world.”

“Apple continues to benefit from our intellectual property while refusing to compensate us.”
