The next iPhone will come with a 120Hz display, according to a new Digitimes report. The iPad Pro has had this feature since 2017. Apple calls it Pro Motion. But this will be the first time an iPhone may get a high refresh rate display, if the report is anything to go by. A key difference will be that the iPad Pro has an iPS LCD display, while the iPhone will pack an OLED.

Next iPhone may jump to 120Hz from 60Hz

High refresh rate displays are becoming increasingly common among Android phones. 90Hz seems to be the all new normal as more and more brands are now launching Android phones with this refresh rate. The OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro are classic examples. The Realme X2 Pro, which is slated to launch in India in November, is also an Android smartphone with a 90Hz display. 120Hz is still relatively uncommon. There are only a few Android phones like the Asus ROG Phone II that boast of a 120Hz panel – this one’s OLED.

An iPhone jumping straight to 120Hz is a little surprising but it’s possible. A 120Hz panel is sure to take a toll on battery life and while phones like the Asus ROG Phone II pack 6,000mAh battery, you can’t expect Apple to pack such a ginormous battery inside an iPhone. But over the last few years, iPhones have been becoming more and more efficient – so much so that iPhones today offer much more improved battery life than iPhones from two or three years ago. Perhaps Apple feels it’s ready to take the plunge with a high refresh rate iPhone now. All iPhones until now – including the iPhone 11 – have had a 60Hz display.

But chances are this feature may be exclusive to the higher-end iPhone Pro models but rumour has it that Apple may be looking to switch to OLED with regards to all its iPhones next year – so we will have to wait and watch out on that one. For some perspective, Pro Motion is exclusive to the iPad Pro. None of the other iPads have it.
