After incumbent telcos such as Bharti and Vodafone issued their points of view and even seemingly trolled Reliance Jio for the latter’s move to charge 6 paise per minute as Interconnect Usage Charge (IUC) amounting to 6 paise per minute, Jio has now hit back with a series of tweets. These concern the 6 paisa per minute outgoing call charge levied for voice calls made to non-Jio networks. Now, Jio has stated that they are just going by what the Telecom Regulatory of India (TRAI) has suggested, and the IUC collected is in line with TRAI’s requirements.

Why Jio is levying IUC?

Now, Jio makes it clear that the decision to charge 6 paise per minute from subscribers, who were enjoying Jio's free calls ever since the launch, was made to adhere to TRAI regulations. In a series of tweets, Jio has stated that “Every time, a Jio customer makes an outgoing mobile call to the other operator’s customer, 6 paisa per minute is paid to the other operator as IUC. This is as per TRAI regulations.” This tweet has gone viral. This has also evoked mixed response from netizens (Twitterati). Check these out, below.

At this instant, Jio has also come up with custom IUC packs for users to recharge and enjoy free minutes. These packs also have a USP which is extra data offering starting as much as 1GB. Cost of these packs start from Rs 10. In response, both Vodafone and Airtel have stated that they would not levy IUC on customers and keep free outgoing calls truly unlimited.
