Nokia, by HMD Global, has now reportedly become the fastest smartphone brand to clock Android 9.0 (Pie) software operability from Q3 2018 up till now. This trend, as per a new Counterpoint Research report, also states that nearly 96% of Nokia smartphones from Q3 2018 are now running Android Pie platform. Performance of other rival smartphone brands in this segment is also apparently not satisfactory.

The Counterpoint research report is titled “Software and Security Updates: The missing Link for Smartphones” and describes the fact that Samsung is in the second position with 89% Android Pie reachability and China-brand Xiaomi in the next rung (behind Samsung) with 84%. Interestingly, the penetration of Android Pie software within Lenovo smartphones were at 43% having made comparatively rapid strides in this area.  

“Operating system and security updates are an aspect of Android smartphones that get relatively little attention. In our experience researching the industry, we have seen a few brands focusing on this. And perhaps because manufacturers are not talking about it, consumer awareness is also low. It doesn’t appear among the ten features consumers say they care about most, in our research,” stated Peter Richardson who is Research Director at Counterpoint Research.  

Android 9.0 OS Updates

Also, Nokia has been numero-uno in even the time taken to upgrade smartphones to the latest Android version – which is Android Pie here. The relatively higher-priced premium smartphones usually receive, the latest Android software updates, quickly. “We, therefore, looked at manufacturers’ performance at updating software across all price tiers. By this analysis, Nokia stands out, again, as the brand most likely to update its full portfolio quickly. Xiaomi and Lenovo also rank high in this metric. Brands like Alcatel and Tecno are the laggards. This is because these brands have broad portfolios, mostly in the sub-US$200 segment, and the lifecycle of their models tends to be short,” informed Abhilash Kumar – Research Analyst. In summary, Nokia smartphone users certainly have lots to cheer about considering that they are now the quickest to receive newer operating system (OS) iteration updates.
