It seems like South Korean smartphone giant Samsung is not the top smartphone vendor anymore, as data from Q4 2018 compiled by Canalys places Apple at the top of the list of the largest smartphone vendors during the time period ending Q4 2018.

Others in the list of the top smartphone vendors include the likes of Oppo (a  surprise entrant), Huawei, and Xiaomi as well. As far as market shares are concerned (in Q4 2018), Apple had 19.8% market share with shipments amounting to as much as 71.7 million

Samsung shipped 70.3 million units and held 19.4% share. The third in the list was Huawei (16.7% market shared), followed by the likes of Oppo (8.8%), Xiaomi (7.3%), and other brands (28.1% combined).

As per Canalys, Samsung’s share in 2017 (for Q4) was 19.2%; and the statistics for 2018 represents a marginal increase in market share; but still trailing Apple whose share fell from 20% in 2017 to 19.8% in 2018 (for Q4).

Huawei and Oppo gained big with Xiaomi undergoing a 3% reduction. As far as Apple shipments are concerned, the top phone was the iPhone XR that reportedly clocked shipments amounting to as much as 22 million.

If the whole of 2018 is taken into consideration then, Samsung still topped the charts for the most number of shipments (for an entire calendar year). Apple came in a close second, followed by the likes of Huawei and Xiaomi. As far as 2019 is concerned, we forecast that brands such s Oppo, Huawei, and an increased number of relatively new entrants could pose stiff competition to Apple as far as shipments and market share are concerned.
