Xiaomi isn’t waiting until D-day to show off its first Mi-branded smartwatch. Company founder and CEO Lei Jun has taken to Chinese social media website Weibo to reveal what their upcoming smartwatch – likely to be called the Mi Watch – will look like. While the design may be inspired by the Apple Watch, it’s safe to say that the Mi Watch is a stunning piece of hardware.
Mi Watch incoming on November 5
The Mi Watch – or whatever Xiaomi decides to call it – will come in black and silver with what looks like a curved OLED display. The render shared by Lei Jun possibly shows off the device’s lock screen hinting at an always-on display on this one. On the side is a crown and possibly the sleep/wake button – much like the Apple Watch. There’s also a microphone in the middle.
Speaking of features and connectivity, Mijia which is the Xiaomi subsidiary making the Mi Watch, has revealed some key aspects in a separate Weibo post. The Mi Watch will support e-SIM for cellular connectivity which means that it will be possible to stay connected on it without a tethered smartphone. The Mi Watch will also support NFC as well as GPS. While hardware isn’t explicitly mentioned, the Mi Watch will possibly be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100 which also raises the possibility that this could be the long-rumoured Wear OS-based Xiaomi smartwatch that we’ve been hearing about.
A reference to a yet to be published Mi Wear app – the app doesn’t exist right now – found in the Wear OS APK recently raised speculation that Xiaomi may be joining in the Wear OS smartwatch bandwagon, with further investigation revealing that the company may call it the Mi Watch. No further details are known at this point of time, but should Xiaomi be working on such a smartwatch, it could mean good news for Wear OS. Even better if it’s the same one that is launching in China on November 5.
Xiaomi will also launch its 108MP five-camera phone, aka Mi CC9 Pro, in China on November 5.
