Japanese electronics manufacturer TDK Corp is poised to produce lithium-ion battery cells for Apple iPhones in India, as disclosed by a government minister on Monday.

In efforts to diversify production away from China, Apple has been emphasizing India as a significant growth hub. The company initiated iPhone assembly operations in the country in 2017 through Wistron, later joined by Foxconn, and currently collaborates with a total of 14 suppliers in India.

TDK plans to establish a manufacturing unit in Haryana and is anticipated to generate several thousand employment opportunities, according to Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Deputy Minister for Information Technology, who communicated the news via the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

The initial report surfaced in Business Standard on Sunday, revealing that the facility's produced cells will be provided to Apple's lithium-ion battery assembler, Sunwoda Electronics.

Both Apple and TDK Corp have not responded immediately to Reuters' request for comments regarding this development.
