Paytm UPI Users Can Now Pay At International Locations: Check Eligible Countries
Launched in 2022, UPI International is a global counterpart of UPI, allowing customers to make payments from their linked bank accounts or RuPay credit cards.
Paytm on Tuesday announced the UPI International facility is now active on its platform, allowing users to make UPI payments at select international locations. The service will benefit Paytm account holders travelling to countries that accept India's homegrown Unified Payments Interface, including the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, France, Mauritius, Bhutan, and Nepal.
"This enhancement allows users to conveniently pay for all use cases including shopping, dining, and local experiences abroad using UPI through their Paytm app," the company said.

Launched in 2022, UPI International is a global counterpart of UPI, allowing customers to make payments from their linked bank accounts or RuPay credit cards to QR-based merchants outside of India. The service supports automatic currency conversion from an international location's official currency to the Indian Rupee. UPI International users also must bear the currency conversion charges levied by their bank.

According to Paytm, users can set up the UPI International service through a one-time activation process linked to their bank accounts. The app will automatically prompt activation as soon as users scan a UPI-enabled QR code abroad. "Travellers can choose a usage period from 1 to 90 days based on their trip and can deactivate the service anytime to ensure payments are only made when intended," the company said. Paytm claims the service also helps prevent accidental transactions at foreign merchants once users are back in India. The exchange rates and conversion fees are also displayed in the app, "ensuring full transparency before completing the transaction."
However, UPI International allows payments at merchants and Point-of-Sale (PoS) terminals only, barring users from making peer-to-peer transactions when travelling in a supported country.
“As the pioneer of mobile payments in India, we are consistently innovating to bring greater convenience to our users. With UPI International, we’re thrilled to extend this ease to Indian travelers, enabling them to make secure, cashless payments in countries like the UAE, Singapore, France, Mauritius, Bhutan, and Nepal. With the upcoming holiday season, we are sure that this launch will make foreign travel even more convenient for users. This expansion reflects our commitment to leveraging technology that empowers our users, wherever they are in the world,” said a Paytm spokesperson.
