Hans Christian Gram’s doodle on Google today is yet another example of the internet giant’s focus on bringing to light lesser-known global scientific minds and talents. Gram was a bacteriologist from Denmark. He is known for the Gram Stain that is considered a benchmark for biologists. The gram Stain magnifies bacteria when viewed under a microscope thereby making it easy to study their properties.

With this doodle, Gram is back to memories of budding scientists and science students across the world. Gram was born almost 166 years ago and today marks his birth anniversary. Gram even analysed Red Blood Cells (RBC) in humans during the early part of his biological career. Doodling Gram’s contributions are an effective way of retaining the scientist’s memories. This is because certain academic syllabi in India do mention about the gram strain – a wide category of science students are in the know-how of about gram strain but tend to forget Hans Christian Gram. Hence, a doodle always evokes the mind behind a discovery. With Gram Strain being a standard practice today, it makes for an interesting aspect to explore more details about micro-organisms.  

Google's focus on doodling the unconventional

At this point in time, it is only worth remembering that Google has been bringing to light some very important people/innovators and greats. Some recent illustrations about these include the likes of Kannada superstar Dr Rajkumar, Punjabi poet Amrita Pritam, Children’s Day in India, Teachers Day in India, Dr Govindappa Venkataswamy (founder of Aravind Hospitals), and Fearless Nadia (Bollywood stuntwoman). These personalities and their contribution to society definitely needs to be brought to light. However, this year’s Teachers Day in India doodle featured an octopus teacher donning various hats, but there was no Dr Radhakrishnan doodled. Last year, a doodle was dedicated to the second Indian President.
