Reportedly, the video streaming giant Netflix is planning several live-action interactive specials including an upcoming episode of 'Black Mirror' Season 5 that will allow the users to influence the events by choosing from storyline options. This will be the streaming portal's first interactive experiment just for adult viewers after starting with kid's television in June 2017. As per reports, Netflix has closed the deal for one more live- action project offering while two of the projects are underway, which are specific adaptations of video games.
As per reports, the people who are familiar with the matter stated that Netflix is developing a slate of interactive TV that expects to release the first of these projects before the end of 2018. The interactive television session is said to start with Black Mirror, given that Season 5 is expected to release in December. However, this will not be the first interactive TV experience for adult viewers, with HBO releasing Steven Soderbergh-directed 'Mosaic' as an app in 2017 before it aired on television in February. Although Soderbergh did not provide the choose-your-own-adventure approach and hence 'Mosaic' allowed the users to just observe the story from different perspectives and not affect the plot of the story.
Netflix's first attempt at interactive television was with 'Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale' that asked the children to take decisions while watching the series every two or three minutes. The length of the episode varied to about 18-39 minutes. The facility of interactive television was available only on specific platforms due to limitations. The use of Minecraft: Story Mode for interactive television sessions was announced in Netflix as an extension for other interactive projects.
