Spotify Lite, a toned-down version of Spotify, is now live in India. Spotify Lite app comes only months after Spotify’s debut in the Indian market. And there are a few things to get you excited. First things first, Spotify Lite app is only 11MB in Size. Meanwhile, the standard Spotify app is 30MB in size. Well, that’s a fairly common change with any ‘Lite’ app that targets emerging markets where storage, bandwidth and hardware resources are a concern.
Introducing a ‘Lite’ version app has now become a go-to strategy to further bolster the app presence in the Indian market and reach more users. Previously, Spotify has tested its Lite app in markets likes Brazil, Mexico Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines among others.
Spotify Lite app bears no major changes in terms of looks and it offers more or less the same features including some key ones to discover music, play music on demand, offline downloads, etc. Additionally, Spotify app lets users keep track of their data consumption. What’s more, Spotify Lite users can also limit their monthly data to reduce their mobile data consumption to some extent.
You can use Spotify Lite app as an alternative to the main app. If you already have the standard Spotify app installed on your phone, you can still use the Spotify Lite app alongside the main app. However, Spotify Lite app is only available for Android users.
With the move, Spotify is looking to further strengthen its presence in India’s overcrowded music streaming segment where it competes with JioSaavn, Gaana, Wynk Music and others. Recently, YouTube announced its standalone YouTube Music app to let users watch music videos and pay for audio-only music streaming and offline downloads.
Last week, Spotify said that it has seen an increase in terms of users paying for Spotify subscription and it has now reached 100 million paid users milestone. The total number of Spotify’s total monthly users including those who use ad-supported, free Spotify service rose to 217 million in the first quarter of this year.
