Issues between China's ByteDance-owned viral video-making app TikTok and authorities of Delhi's Jama Masjid remain unresolved even weeks after the controversial handstand dancing video shot using TikTok inside the mosque premises had previously gone viral. Here's what happened:
According to a recent report, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid has maintained the ban on the TikTok app inside the mosque premises. Bukhari has also made it clear that people won't be allowed to break into songs and dance on the masjid premises.
"Whether it’s a mosque, or a temple, or a gurudwara, these places are for worship, not for singing and dancing. I had come across such videos made on this app where people were seen dancing inside the mosque courtyard and then I took the decision," the Shahi Imam told Telegraph India.
Last month, a viral TikTok video shot in Delhi's Jama Masjid had sparked a massive controversy after the administration imposed a ban on tourists from entering the Mosque except for those visiting for a prayer. The showed two foreign women doing a handstand and dancing to film songs inside the mosque.
Shortly after the video went viral on social media, TikTok removed the video and said it doesn't endorse or promote videos violating its community guidelines
"TikTok in no way endorses or promotes videos that violate our comprehensive Community Guidelines," TikTok previously said in its statement provided to RepublicWorld. "We do not condone posting content that might offend or disrespect any person, place or religious beliefs."
The mosque authorities have also been put up boards prohibiting people from using the TikTok app on the mosque premises.
In April, TikTok was briefly banned in India over concerns of "pornographic and inappropriate content" being made available through the app. The ban was later lifted after the interim court order failed to sustain and TikTok promised to improve the app's overall experience.
The mosque administration has also deployed the team whose job is to patrol the premises and stop people from recording TikTok videos.
