According to reports, VLC for Windows 10 could be getting Apple AirPlay support sometime soon. VLC is open-source video player app that supports multiple platforms such as Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, Chrome OS, iOS, Apple TV etc. VLC has hit the 3 billion downloads milestone and Videolan, developers of VLC player could be gearing up to announce some new, exciting features.
Jean-Baptiste Kempf, a lead developer of VLC app told Variety that they have plans to implementing Airplay. Once that happens, Android users can beam videos from their mobile devices to Apple TVs. Kempf was quoted as saying that Airplay support could make it to the main VLC app in about a month. Folks over at VLC also demonstrated enhanced support for VR content to let users watch traditional 2D movies using VR headsets like HTC Vive.
Kempf was further quoted as saying that VLC managed to reverse-engineer majority of VR headsets with an aim to bring native support for VR content using the main VLC app. It was further explained that this implementation would be based on around 1MB of additional code rather than opting for individual SDKs by headset manufacturers, which would have resulted in 100MB of additional code.
Just like with Chromecast, we intend to support AirPlay on any platform. There is no release date yet at all. We would like it to be part of VLC 4, which is the next major release we are currently working on. We will let you know in advance once we define a date.
At the moment of writing this, we don't know the exact timeline when the Airplay support feature will be rolled out, but folks over at Videolan could be planning to introduce it with the next major update VLC 4.
Last year, Videolan added support for Chromecast, in addition to 8K and HDR content.
