WhatsApp dark mode is reportedly in works. As per WAbetainfo, folks over at WhatsApp has started working on the much-awaited ‘dark mode.’ Right now, the feature may be under tests. WhatsApp dark mode was spotted in WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.19.82. However, the feature is not available yet for everyone. We installed WhatsApp beta 2.19.84 on our Android but we did not come across settings leading to dark mode.
When will it be available?
According to WAbetainfo, the dark mode on WhatsApp for Android will not be OLED-friendly, unlike WhatsApp for iOS. Although the release timeline of the dark mode on WhatsApp for Android is unknown, WhatsApp is likely to take significantly more time given the amount of work and development required to make it fully ready. Plus, the development of a fully-compatible OLED-friendly dark mode is expected to be time-consuming.
A glimpse of WhatsApp dark mode
Screenshots shared by WAbetainfo offer a glimpse of WhatsApp dark mode. As you can see, all kinds of settings bear a dark background. However, the report did not reveal how to activate dark mode in WhatsApp. But it claims to have found what it calls the first hidden tracks. Last year, WhatsApp for iOS users received dark mode update.
According to screenshots revealed by WAbetainfo, the feature has apparently been implemented in the ‘Settings’ tab, in addition to the notification area, data and storage settings, chat settings and account settings. We are seeking more clarity on how it looks in the chat screens.
WhatsApp’s dark mode is not pitch black, unlike Messenger. It is mostly dark gray. Many other instant messaging apps including Telegram and Android messages have received the dark mode update.
