It’s that time of the year again. If you’re into tech – fan, enthusiast, critic – there’s a very high possibility that you’d want to stay awake when September arrives. For September is iPhone time. Year after year. This year is no different. Apple will launch its next batch of iPhones, aka the iPhone 11 lineup, later today (September 10, starting 10:30PM IST) at the iconic Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California. This year Apple is hyping innovation and a burst of color – possibly hinting at a slew of color options coming to the entry-level iPhone XR successor. 

The iPhone 11 may not be the only product Apple announces today though. There could be more. A next-generation Apple Watch with new sleep-tracking technology, an update to the Apple TV box in time for Apple Arcade, new iPads including a successor to the premiere iPad Pro may all be on the cards. We will be covering the launch live as it happens to tell you about all the announcements, but here’s a quick preview of what could be in store for Apple’s ‘special’ event. 

iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max 

Just like last year, Apple is expected to launch three new iPhones, replacing the iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. Apple is likely to call them iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. Rumor has it that the Pro variants will support Apple Pencil - a first for any iPhone. 

The iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max will pack new hardware - Apple’s new A13 chip to be precise. All the three new models will likely have the same screen size and resolution as the outgoing models – with the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max retaining OLED panels, while the iPhone 11 will still pack LCD. Apple may be looking to change the haptics this time round with a new taptic engine. Chances are this could bring some changes to Apple’s haptic touch. 

The current-generation iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max both have the same dual rear cameras. Their successors will come with three rear cameras, if rumor mills are anything to go by. The third sensor in the iPhone XS (and iPhone XS Max) successor will reportedly be wide-angle and will be also able to “capture more pixels so Apple software could, for example, automatically repair a video or photo to fit in a subject that may have been accidentally cut off from the initial shot,” according to a recent Bloomberg report. The feature may be called smart frame and it may be exclusive to the wide-angle lens, according to a separate report. 

The front-facing camera is also said to be getting an update on the iPhone 11 with the ability to support slow-motion video recording at 120fps. 

Lightning is expected to stay put for charging, data syncing and audio out, although rumor has it that Apple may be looking to bring a reverse wireless charging feature – taking a page from Samsung’s book – so users will be able to charge supported devices like the AirPods through it.   

Apple Watch Series 5 

While all the three iPhones have leaked extensively, another product that’s likely to launch alongside, hasn’t leaked like at all – which is surprising considering how things are with new tech these days. The product in question is the next Apple Watch, which is likely to be called the Apple Watch Series 5. 

Rumors that Apple maybe looking to launch two new Apple Watch Series 5 models with updated build materials – with core hardware tipped to remain the same – have been doing the rounds for a while now. But according to a new leak, it seems as many as four new Apple Watch Series 5 models may be in development and Apple may launch them on September 10 alongside the iPhone 11. 

Apple is also said to be prepping a sleep tracking feature, internally codenamed Burrito, that it may announce at the September 10 keynote event. It isn’t exactly clear if Apple is looking to bring sleep tracking to all Apple Watch devices through a software update or if it would launch it first with the Apple Watch Series 5, on September 10, and then subsequently bring it to other devices in the lineup.   

Apple Arcade, Apple TV+ price and availability specifics 

With iPhone sales dipping by the day, it’s no surprise that Apple is looking at services – services generate the bulk of its revenue at this point of time – like Apple Arcade and Apple TV+ as the future. We still do not know when Apple Arcade and Apple TV+ will officially be available though. We don’t know anything about their pricing either. This could change later today.     

Apple TV update 

The Apple TV may (finally) get an update this year with a faster A12 processor, given that Apple is really touting Apple Arcade as a cross-platform service. Not to mention, Apple TV+ is also just around the corner.  

Apple iPad Pro successor 

Rumors that Apple is working on at least two more iPad models for 2019 have been doing the rounds for a while now. The two iPads are apparently codenamed A2068 and A2198. The said iPad models are said to start shipping sometime in October – and Apple may announce them at its September 10 iPhone 11 event.  

While the A2068 is said to be an entry-level iPad, the A2198 will reportedly be a successor to the flagship iPad Pro – an iPad that Apple likes to market as a thorough laptop replacement. Chances are the A2068 model may be successor to the sixth generation base iPad. 

Software 

Apple will also likely announce availability specifics of the software that drives its entire range of hardware products at its iPhone 11 event. This includes iOS 13, macOS 10.15 Catalina, iPadOS 13, watchOS 6 and tvOS 13.
