Microsoft could be working on a new foldable Surface device featuring two screens. Folks over at WindowsUnited has spotted a new patent, offering a glimpse of what future Surface devices could look like. Microsoft may be secretly working on a new Surface device with a special hinge. It uses a liquid mechanism to reduce the amount of stress on displays when you fold or unfold the device.

How it works

In the patent filing, an example shows a foldable device with two sides and a flexible OLED panel. The display can be extended across the device. The hinge is also described with a significant amount of detail by Microsoft, something the company has long been focused on. Liquid filled inside cavities around the screen help it bend. The flexible display can also be moved into different positions.

Microsoft has illustrated multiple concepts of its hinge work in the patent filing. Further, they have it structured in such a way that it can “prevent foreign materials from entering the hinge assembly/device.” Interestingly, Microsoft will likely license this technology to other partners and PC makers. Currently, Microsoft may be readying a version of Windows OS for foldable devices, codenamed "Windows Lite."
