Virgin Hyperloop One (VHO) is estimated to create more than 18 lakh direct and indirect jobs out of Mumbai-Pune proposed hyperloop route. Over the entire duration of construction, the American transportation company is expecting an investment of more than Rs 70,000 crores. Employment projections by Virgin Hyperloop One and KPMG consider both - direct and indirect jobs - created via construction, operation, manufacturing and research and development. Commenting on it, Harj Dhaliwal, Managing Director of India and the Middle East for Virgin Hyperloop One, had this to say:

"We envision a future in which Maharashtra becomes a global supply hub to support hyperloop projects around the world with manufacturing, design, and engineering support services –– making it not just hyperloop’s first home, but a global leader for the first new mode of mass transportation in over 100 years," said Dhaliwal.

Pune to Mumbai in under 30 minutes with Virgin Hyperloop One, work on first phase likely to begin by December 2019

Last month, Maharashtra government-designated Virgin Hyperloop One's Mumbai-Pune route a “public infrastructure project.” For now, Mumbai-Pune is being touted as the world's first proposed Hyperloop project, which will be recognised as one of the traditional forms of mass transit, among others.

The company said it will create more than $36 billion in socio-economic benefits resulting in a 2.6 per cent increase in State GDP over its lifetime. The project is also said to create manufacturing opportunities for Maharashtra, resulting in manufacturing and supply of hyperloop components within the country and foreign export.

Mumbai-Pune distance is about 150 kilometres that take more than 3 hours to cover by road. Meanwhile, the Hyperloop project aims to cover 150 km distance in less than 30 minutes by its ultra-high-speed technology. The project is expected to complete up to 200 million trips annually.

Virgin Hyperloop One has proposed a two-phased construction plan for Mumbai-Pune route. Phase-1 will include the construction of an 11.8 km demonstration track. Phase-2 will include the construction of the rest of the system connecting Pune with Mumbai via Navi Mumbai International Airport.
