You heard that right. Nokia branded smart TVs are indeed coming to India. While we don’t know much about these smart TVs just yet, one thing’s certain – Nokia isn’t making them. Flipkart is. Days after entering a strategic partnership with Motorola, Flipkart is tying up with Nokia – in a very similar way – to “develop, facilitate the manufacturing and distribution of the Nokia branded Smart TVs, while managing the end-to-end go-to-market strategy.”

In simpler terms, even though these Nokia branded smart TVs will come with, well Nokia branding, they won’t exactly be made or sold by Nokia. This is because the strategic partnership grants Flipkart the right to use the Nokia brand for smart TVs in India. This is “a global first for the Nokia brand in the TV category,” Flipkart said in a press release.

“Working with Nokia allows us to further expand the choice of high-quality, technologically advanced products for Indian consumers. Nokia is a globally popular technology brand and enjoys immense brand recall, so we’re excited to start this journey with them to extend the brand into a fast-growing product segment. We are committed, as always, to bringing best of brands and technology together as we work towards welcoming the next 200 million consumers on our platform,” Adarsh Menon, who is Senior Vice President and Head - Private Brands, Electronics and Furniture at Flipkart said in a statement.

Nokia branded smart TVs will be made in India

These Nokia branded smart TVs will be made in India and feature “superior audio quality powered by JBL’s sound program.” Sadly, that’s all the information we have about these upcoming Nokia-branded smart TVs. So, we’ll have to wait and watch out for information.

“Today marks the start of an exciting new chapter for the Nokia brand in a new category. And where better to start than in India, where our brand has been trusted for quality, design and reliability. Flipkart’s understanding of the needs and behaviors of Indian consumers, and the power of its reach, will help it make Nokia branded smart TVs accessible and affordable to many,” Vipul Mehrotra, Vice President, Nokia Brand Partnerships said.

Lenovo-owned Motorola Mobility also recently forayed into India’s burgeoning smart TV market by launching a slew of affordable products in partnership with Flipkart. Motorola’s smart TVs are available in a slew of size and resolution options starting from as low as Rs 13,999 and going all the way to Rs 64,999.
