Xiaomi will launch the Mi CC9 Pro with a 108MP main camera and another telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom in China on November 5. It will also launch another product, most likely a smartwatch made by its Mijia subsidiary on the same day. But because this smartwatch is launching in China to begin with, chances are it may not be the long rumoured Wear OS-based Xiaomi smartwatch.

A reference to a yet to be published Mi Wear app – the app doesn’t exist right now – found in the Wear OS APK recently raised speculation that Xiaomi may be joining in the Wear OS smartwatch bandwagon, with further investigation revealing that the company may call it the Mi Watch. No further details are known at this point of time, but should Xiaomi be working on such a smartwatch, it could mean good news for Wear OS.

Xiaomi is known for affordable value for money hardware, and something similar will be expected from the Mi Watch as well. Xiaomi’s Mi Bands are popular in India – these are made by Huami. With the kind of pricing and feature set that Xiaomi is known to offer in its products, the Mi Watch could be Google’s best shot at making Wear OS exciting for potential buyers.

As for the upcoming smartwatch, a teaser poster shared by Mijia on Chinese social media Weibo says it would not be just another large-sized Mi Band hinting at more advanced features. An accompanying teaser image shows off what looks like a magnified Mi Band with a colour display and emoji.

The main highlight of the recently launched Mi Band 4 is its color OLED display that’s nearly 40 per cent bigger than the previous Mi Band 3 – more precisely, the Mi Band 4 comes with a 0.95-inch AMOLED color display with a 120x240 pixel resolution and 2.5D scratch-resistant glass. The color AMOLED display allows Xiaomi to bring custom watch faces to the Mi Band 4 – there are as many as 77 colorful dial themes on offer here.

While little is known about Xiaomi’s upcoming smartwatch, chances are it may just be a China-only affair much like most Xiaomi Mijia smartwatches.
