Airtel 3G services have finally been phased out in certain telecom circles. As of now, circles such as Haryana, and Punjab.  This move, as per the telco to effectively deploy 4G network across these telecom circles. If you are an Airtel 3G subscriber in these circles, do upgrade to 4G soon.

At this juncture, there are reports about the telco having shut its 3G services completely in the above regions. Last month, the telco had even sent out alert messages to its 3G subscribers in circles such as Karnataka. These messages alerted users to upgrade to 4G.

Even Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is an option for such subscribers. In case users do not take action, then their smartphones would become unusable with respect to making voice calls and getting access to internet. The Airtel 3G network is now a legacy network in various telecom circles in India. Hence, if you are an Airtel 3G subscriber, do upgrade to 4G or directly port out.

Earlier in 2019, Airtel announced shutting down of 3G network in Kolkata. This was to deviate only towards 4G. However, the telco would continue with 2G keeping in mind the rural penetration. In case it shuts 2G services, there would naturally be increased losses as rural customers might port out directly to rival telcos.

In related news, the Interconnect Usage Charge (IUC) is now a hot topic of discussion across India. These charges are mandated by TRAI. As of now, Reliance Jio is passing on paying IUC to customers. These are charges that are paid from the onward operator, with respect to voice calls, to the recipient operator. Jio currently charges 6 paise per minute as IUC – in line with TRAI prescription. Other telcos like Vodafone, BSNL, and Airtel have stated that they would not pass on IUC to customers.
