Apple smartphone shipments that have reportedly dropped by 20% in the first quarter of 2019 (Q1 2019) are seemingly a result of an aspect where iPhone users held on to their smartphones for comparatively larger time periods thereby potentially inflicting a decline in the overall shipments of iPhones.

As per Counterpoint research, that cites an internal analysis, the rate of substituting iPhones is now three years, up from the earlier two-year period in which iPhone users apparently typically replaced their iPhones. The reported 20% decline in iPhone shipments also resulted in an overall 8% year-on-year decline in the global premium smartphones during Q1 2019.

The trend of Apple iPhone users reportedly preferring to use their handsets for an extended period of time resulting in the reverse trend of contributing to declining in the overall iPhone shipments during Q1 2019, sounds unconventional, to say the least.

As far as the global premium smartphone segment is concerned, Samsung also reportedly made considerable gains and its recent Galaxy S10 smartphones were important.

The premium segment is also estimated, by Counterpoint analysts, to grow with the increasing penetration of 5G. Here, it is worth remembering that 5G has been going live in multiple countries of the world and 5G-compatible smartphones are also increasingly being launched.

As far as 5G is concerned, the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Shanghai (MWC 2019) is hugely expected (by enthusiasts) to witness the advent of a new 5G-compatible handset from Vivo. This smartphone could also shore-up global 5G interest.
