Days after launching the 48MP camera-toting Realme X, Realme has confirmed that it is working on a phone with a whopping 64MP main camera. The phone in question will use Samsung’s 64MP GW1 sensor and while Samsung is expected to debut the world’s first 64MP camera phone internationally, Realme could be the first brand to bring it to India.

Realme India CEO Madhav Sheth has shared a picture taken with the mystery phone Twitter confirming three things – the phone will come with four rear cameras, the main camera will use a 64MP GW1 sensor, and India will be the first market to get it.

“Working on the new premium killer! Introducing world's first smartphone camera with 64MP GW1 largest 1/1.72” sensor and mega 1.6µm pixel with amazing clear shots in low light too. I promise you Realme will launch this real camera beast first in India before anywhere else,” Madhav Sheth posted on Twitter.

Samsung’s 64MP GW1 sensor works on the same principle as its 48MP GM1 and 32MP GD1 sensors – effectively producing sharper, more detailed 16MP photos in low light, and using software interpolation to produce high resolution 64MP photos as and when required.

Samsung has confirmed that smartphones equipped with its 64MP GW1 sensor will start shipping sometime in the second half of this year. Which is around the same time we may see Realme launching the said phone. Arch rival Xiaomi is also said to be working on a phone with the same 64MP main camera.

Considering how both Realme and Xiaomi are known for their aggressive pricing, it won’t be surprising if both the brands make the 64MP smartphone camera a mainstream affair as well with their respective launches.

Realme has launched the Realme X in China at a starting price of CNY 1,499 (roughly Rs 15,400) for the base model with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, while the top-end model with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage will retail for CNY 1,799 (roughly Rs 18,400). There’s also a version with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage which will sell for CNY 1,599 (roughly Rs 16,400). The Realme X is also expected to arrive in India soon with slightly tweaked hardware.
