We now know that there is going to be a foldable smartphone from Samsung which could be made official and even vital technical details outed at the Samsung Unpacked event on February 20 that is not too far away from now. This phone, with a purportedly interesting foldable screen prototype, could be called the Galaxy Fold, and the interesting aspect here is that this could just about herald the beginning of a new foldable smartphones trend.
We think that the Samsung Galaxy Fold, once official, could lead to more handsets with similar foldable display prototypes hitting the market. For starters, renowned technology tipster Evan Blass going by the Twitter moniker evleaks states that the foldable Galaxy smartphone would be called the Galaxy Fold; now, this is still unofficial till Samsung unboxes the handset officially.
A new trend - commercially
Aside from the nomenclature, the Galaxy Fold, once official, could lead to the emergence of a new trend exclusively focussed on foldable prototype of phones. The primary reason for this trend could be the fact that other brands have also been expected to launch foldable display smartphones and in this scenario Samsung could well be the numero-uno with respect to officially showcasing a live foldable phone and in case this is commercially available (soon in 2019), could indeed grab eyeballs as an actual selling product.
Potential shot-in-the-arm for smartphone shipments
Up next, apart from disruption, Samsung could once again climb to pole position in the smartphone shipments category. Not too long ago, feature-phones from Samsung such as the Samsung Champ, Samsung Guru (for India), and a host of Galaxy “music-phones” from the brand caused disruption in a host of Asian (and even other markets) regions causing the feature phone shipments to swell up; which are still nearly steady even to this day. Hence, we think that the Galaxy Fold could experience a similar upward trajectory once official and commercial.
Intense competition to tabs - Compact tabs
Finally, the current-gen tabs could come under intense competition from foldable display smartphones; as the latter generally (in common sense) comes with two displays with one display placed and folded on top of another; and if open both the displays should offer more than a tab-like experience while content is being viewed on the screen. With this, premium smartphones could potentially be the in-thing appealing even to the ultra budget-conscious buyers.
