Xiaomi plans to launch more than 10 5G smartphones next year
The move comes in the wake of stiff competition from the likes of Huawei and strong demand for the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G in the Chinese market.
Xiaomi seemingly plans to go all out on 5G next year. CEO Lei Jun has confirmed that Xiaomi plans to launch more than 10 5G phones next year, according to a new Reuters report. The move comes in the wake of stiff competition from the likes of Huawei and strong demand for the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G in the Chinese market. The Mi 9 Pro 5G is Xiaomi’s first 5G-ready smartphone to launch in China.
“People in the industry fear that next year 4G models won’t sell, this is a step you have no choice but to take. So, we hope that operators can speed up their expansion of 5G base stations,” Lei Jun said while speaking at the World Internet conference in China adding that Xiaomi plans to launch 5G models across “high, middle, and low-end price tiers next year.”
Xiaomi launched the Mi 9 Pro 5G in China in late September. The Mi 9 Pro 5G is an update to its popular Mi 9 flagship, which comes with a faster chipset, bigger and faster charging battery, improved haptics and next generation 5G connectivity.
The biggest USP of the Mi 9 Pro 5G is its 30W wireless Mi Charge Turbo tech, which is claimed to top up the phone in just 69 minutes, wirelessly – while a 50 per cent charge is said to take some 25 minutes. Xiaomi claims its 30W wireless Mi Charge Turbo tech uses a 5-layer nanocrystal receiver coil with a conversion efficiency of up to a 98 per cent. This should help keep things under check when it comes to temperature throttling.
Elsewhere, the phone is powered by Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line Snapdragon 855+ processor paired with up to 12GB RAM and up to 512GB storage. There’s also a sizeable 4,000mAh battery under the hood. On the front, the Mi 9 Pro 5G comes with a 6.39-inch 1080p+ OLED display with a waterdrop-style or dot notch as Xiaomi likes to call it. There's a triple camera setup arranged vertically on the back (with a 48MP main camera) and there is no physical fingerprint reader – the Mi 9 Pro comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner.
