Lying close to the old Nalanda varsity, the hall stands as a reminder of Chinese scholar Hiuen Tsang, who not only was educated at the prestigious learning centre, but went on to become a professor at the same establishment.

In January 1957, India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, received the relics of Xuanzang along with his biography and an endowment for the construction of a hall in his memory from His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama of Tibet, as per Bihar Tourism.

The word samavasarana is derived from two words, sama meaning general and avasara meaning opportunity A place where all have a common opportunity of acquiring wisdom," according to Bihar Tourism.
