Escalating Sudan Violence Claims Lives, UN Urges Protection for Aid Workers as Crisis Deepens

U.N. Spokesperson said during a press briefing on June 11 that violence in Sudan's northern Darfur region is increasing, with at least six children killed since June 7, and one aid worker dying of a bullet wound yesterday in El Fasher. Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-Genera Farhan Haq urged that all humanitarian workers must be protected, as they provide essential services for the displaced people of Sudan. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization have delivered "nearly 20 metric tons of emergency health supplies to 18 health facilities and 5 stabilization centers in North Kordofan State," according to Haq. Sudan’s conflict began in April last year when soaring tensions between the leaders of the military and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary erupted into fighting in the capital, Khartoum, and elsewhere in the country. The U.N. migration agency tells The Associated Press that the number of internally displaced people in Sudan has reached more than 10 million as war drives many from their homes.
