India's rising chess star D Gukesh played a key role in India beating China in their fixture at the ongoing Chess Olympiad - even though a clash against World Championship rival Ding Liren never materalised. Gukesh beat Wei Yi in what was the decisive match of the tie, but those hoping to see him take on Ding were left disappointed when China rested the reigning world champion in the tie. Ding has been in poor form in the Olympiad, losing 1 and drawing the remaining 4 games he has played. He even admitted that Gukesh may be the favourite in their World Championship match.
