Berlin began administering the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine Wednesday with the first doses intended mainly for nurses and medical staff.

Dilek Kalayci, Berlin's Health Senator, observed some of the first inoculations at a vaccination center set up in Terminal C of Berlin's former Tegel Airport.

Germany's infection rates are gradually declining toward the government's target level, and politicians have vowed to open schools and child-care centres as the first priority.

AstraZeneca has agreed to supply 40 million vaccine doses to the European Union by the end of March.
